Fender Makes Vintage Guitar Ads by Bob Perine Available

on Tue, 09/06/2011 - 1:52pm

Fender is now selling beautiful vintage guitar ads created by the late Bob Perine on their website.

Robert Perine was raised in Los Angeles in a very artistic family.  At the age of six his father drew his portrait and asked young Bob to do the same, “it was like magic and from that time on I knew I wanted to be an artist.”  After enlisting in the US Navy during World War II, Bob studied at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles for four years.

Saying Goodbye to the Storm

on Sun, 08/28/2011 - 10:22pm

I hope everyone is safe and has successfully outlasted Hurricane Irene.

As the storm heads out, I thought this might be a good time to revisit the song "Goodnight Irene".

I'm old enough to remember this being a favorite song of my parents. And old enough to remember helping my mom and sister do dishes after dinner (I was the official "dryer") and three of us would harmonize to this song while we worked.

Singing always made the worst of chores go easier, and in looking back...actually made it a fun time.

With the weekend hurricane, it got me thinking about the song, and it's origins and what

Grace Potter and Daryl Hall

on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 10:37am

Here's a plug for one of my all-time favorite websites...Live from Daryl's House.

Since I can remember, I've always been a huge fan of Hall & Oates, and good soulful singing in general.

If you've not checked out this site yet, every month Daryl has a special guest performer come out to his house for a jam session.  Every month takes a new flavor, with some really great results.  If you hit the site, be sure to check the archived episodes as well....there's something for everybody's music tastes in there.

This month's guest is Grace Potter.  Great episode!

The Origin of the Blues

on Fri, 08/12/2011 - 1:06pm

Sometimes, during breaks at band practice, we get into the strangest conversations.

Last week, we somehow got on the subject of Mr. Ed, and what a great TV show it was.

Here's a link that explains more about the show and cast in general - Mr. Ed

Anyway...we also discussed Mr. Ed performing a couple songs on the show.  We remembered Mr. Ed singing "Pretty Little Filly", but I'd forgotten that this had started with a song called "Empty Feed Bag Blues".

I wonder, if watching this as a kid, is what turned me onto the blues in the first place. I suppose, in fairness, Mr.

Lancaster's West End

on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 12:26pm

All three of us have roots in Lancaster's West End.  Two of us live there, and I grew up there.

I think there's something really special going on in Lancaster. Not just the west end either.

I've ventured down to First Friday's a few times and downtown just comes alive.  There's so many positive things happening, especially with the arts, and that is really encouraging.

The business community is really to be applauded as well. It's a win/win for everyone. Business, artists and performers, the community and visitors.
